Cpanel File Manager: How to Manage Your Website Files

If you manage a website, cPanel File Manager is one of the most essential tools. It lets you handle all your website files directly from your cPanel dashboard, eliminating the need for FTP software. With File Manager, you can create, upload, modify, move, copy, compress, extract, and delete files with ease. Here’s a detailed guide on how to use it effectively.

Accessing File Manager

  1. Log in to your cPanel account.

  2. Scroll to the Files section and click File Manager. A new tab will open, showing your file dashboard.

By default, File Manager opens your Home Directory, but you can switch to the Web Root (public_html) or any document root of your domain or subdomain.

Navigating and Searching Files

Use the File Manager search bar to locate files quickly. You can search your entire account, public_html, or the current folder. Remember, the public_html folder contains all files visible on your website. Files like index.html or index.php in this folder load first when someone visits your website.

File Manager Preferences

Click Settings to configure File Manager options. You can choose to:

  • Show hidden files (dotfiles) for advanced editing

  • Disable character encoding verification dialogs when editing text files

Working with Files and Folders

  • Create Files or Folders: Click New File or New Folder, enter a name and path, and save.

  • Copy or Move: Select single or multiple files/folders, click Copy or Move, and specify the destination path.

  • Upload Files: Drag-and-drop files or select them from your computer. Enable Overwrite to replace files with the same name.

  • Download Files: Select files and click Download to save them locally.

  • Delete Files: Delete files by moving them to Trash or permanently removing them by selecting Skip Trash.

  • Rename Files: Double-click or use the Rename button to change file or folder names.

Editing Files

  • Text Editor: For HTML, PHP, or plain text files, use the Edit option. Confirm encoding if prompted.

  • Code Editor: Use this for syntax-highlighted editing, making it easier to work with code files.

Compressing and Extracting Files

  • Compress Files: Select files or folders and click Compress. Choose from Zip, Gzip, or BZip2, then name the archive.

  • Extract Files: Select a compressed file and click Extract, specifying a path. File Manager will create the folder if it doesn’t exist. Supports Zip, GZip, and BZip2 formats.

Viewing Files

You can view supported file types directly in File Manager by selecting the file and clicking View. The content will open in a new tab, making it easy to check file contents quickly.

File Manager in cPanel is a powerful, user-friendly tool that simplifies website file management. From creating new files to editing code or compressing archives, it allows website owners and developers to work efficiently without the complexity of FTP.
