How to Add a New Category in WordPress
Organizing your blog posts into categories is a simple but effective way to improve navigation, user experience, and SEO. Categories allow visitors to easily find related content and make your website structure more logical.
Here’s how to create a new category in WordPress:
Step 1: Log In to Your WordPress Dashboard
Start by logging into your WordPress admin area. From here, you can manage all posts, pages, and site settings.
Step 2: Go to Categories
From the dashboard menu, navigate to Posts > Categories.
This page shows all your existing categories and allows you to create new ones.
Step 3: Fill in the Category Details
Under Add New Category, enter the following:
-
Name: Type the category name, for example, “Computer” or “Travel”
-
Slug: Enter a URL-friendly version of the name (optional; WordPress can generate this automatically)
-
Parent: Leave as None if it’s a main category, or select a parent category to create a sub-category
-

Step 4: Create the Category
Click Add New Category. Your new category will now appear in the list and can be assigned to posts.
